The final leg of the ‘End Salmon Farming’ digivan tour ends with a splash in Edinburgh today (6 November). Protestors in hazmat suits, a bathtub and a kayak will illustrate the toxic and deadly nature of salmon pharming in the water in front of the Scottish Parliament and the Palace of Holyroodhouse from 11.45am to Noon.
A funeral march – featuring activists dressed as zombie salmon carrying a cage of dead fish – will leave Edinburgh Castle at 11am for the migration down the Royal Mile. A digivan with a giant TV screen showcasing gruesome video footage of welfare abuse inside salmon feedlots will visit Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Lidl and Asda in Leith and Edinburgh from 9am to 10am before joining protestors on the Royal Mile and outside the Scottish Parliament.
“Salmon farming is dead in the warming water not just in Scotland but all over our precious blue planet,” said Don Staniford, Director of $camon $cotland. “The lethal salmon farming industry is an environmental pariah and welfare nightmare which is bringing international shame to Scotland. Rising water temperatures, toxic algal blooms, swarms of jellyfish and plagues of parasites are killing off millions of factory farmed salmon.”
Campaigners – including anglers, environmentalists, vegans and foodies – have spent the last week on a 1,000 mile digivan tour of UK supermarkets demanding an end to the greenwashing of Scottish salmon as ‘responsible’, ‘welfare friendly’ and ‘organic’.
“Consumers are urged to put Scottish salmon in the bin where it belongs rather than in their shopping basket,” concluded Staniford who was recently dubbed the ‘Kayak Vigilante’ by The Times/Die Welt. “Please join the Scottish salmon boycott to end the suffering of the King of Fish. Shame on supermarkets and certification bodies such as RSPCA Assured, the Aquaculture Stewardship Council and Soil Association for greenwashing Scottish salmon.”
Tomorrow (7 November), Norwegian/Faroese-owned giant Bakkafrost will publish their Q3 2023 financial results which are forecast to include a near 50% fall in production in Scotland. Norwegian-owned giant Mowi publish their Q3 2023 results on 8 November with “problematic biology” accounting for “disappointing” financial forecasts. On 15 November, Scottish Sea Farms (Norskott Havbruk) will publish their Q3 2023 results with massive losses predicted.
