What action is being taken against Scottish Sea Farms (Norskott Havbruk) for the illegal killing of a seal at Wyre salmon farm in Orkney in October 2022?

 

$camon $cotland urge the authorities to take immediate action against Scottish Sea Farms (Norskott Havbruk) including a prosecution and heavy fine for breaking the law in relation to the killing of seals at Wyre salmon farm in Orkney (in both October 2022 and December 2021). 

 

In view of the illegal killing of seals it beggars belief that Marks & Spencer continues to source exclusively from Scottish Sea Farms and brand the product as “responsibly sourced”.  Moreover, it is a royal scandal and a national disgrace that the RSPCA and RSPCA Assured continue to condone the illegal killing of seals by salmon farms.

The Orcadian newspaper in Orkney and Wyvex Media which owns The Oban Times, Lochaber Times, Campbeltown Courier, Arran Banner and Argyllshire Advertiser have refused to publish $camon $cotland's whistleblower hotline advert (the offending adverts have already been published by The National, Stornoway Gazette, The Shetland Times and West Highland Free Press)!

 

Here's the refusal from The Orcadian newspaper (owned by the Orkney Media Group - which is controlled by S & JD Robertson Group Ltd) who claimed that "the advert, and the website listed, contain imagery where the accuracy and method of presentation could potentially be considered inaccurate, misleading or distorted":

One damning document titled 'Grading Standards Photos' dated January 2023 (scheduled to be revised in January 2024) illustrates the scale of welfare abuse and unnecessary suffering inside Mowi salmon farms (all accredited as 'welfare friendly' via RSPCA Assured with most Mowi salmon now certified as 'responsible' by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council and nine salmon farms certified as 'organic' by the Soil Association):

“Consumers still buying Scottish salmon should take a close look at the horrific state of the poor fish which ends up on their plates,” said Don Staniford, Director of $camon $cotland.  “With all the welfare abuse including death crowns, lesions and open wounds plaguing Mowi salmon it is not surprising that whole salmon has been replaced by skinless Scottish salmon.  Supermarkets are shamefully greenwashing Mowi salmon as ‘responsibly sourced’ and ‘welfare friendly’ via RSPCA Assured, the Soil Association and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council.”

 

 

 

Abigail Penny, Executive Director of Animal Equality UK, said: “These nauseating images give a glimpse into what life is really like for farmed salmon, and it’s far from pretty.  I dread to imagine the misery these animals endured.  What is particularly alarming is that the salmon classified as ‘ordinary’ clearly experienced extreme jaw deformities, red raw lice sores, and wounds so deep that their skulls were visible.  Significant health and welfare issues are clearly so commonplace on fish farms that the salmon industry now believes this suffering to be normal, but any consumer will no doubt feel sick to their stomach when they see these repulsive photos.  We cannot buy into the industry’s lies.  We must take a stand and stop supporting this ruthless industry before millions more salmon succumb to the same sad fate.”

 

 

 

 

“The fact that Mowi workers – gagged via Non-Disclosure Agreements and the threat of losing their jobs – are still prepared to leak information speaks volumes,” continued Staniford.  “The camera never lies unlike Mowi.  Please boycott RSPCA Assured Mowi salmon – avoid Scottish salmon like the proverbial plague.  Mowi is the Monsanto and McDonalds of the seas.”

Did a 'Subject Access Request' - which exposed "dangerous" information on 'Moscow broker' Yuri Lopatinsky and was seen as a "direct attack" on Associated Seafoods Ltd - trigger the sale of shares and exit of Chairman Bill Hazeldean in December 2022?  That's certainly the implication - my SAR directed at Associated Seafoods Ltd was filed on 15 December 2022 and one week later on 22 December 2022 shareholders including Hazeldean and the Sloan family suddenly sold up after over a decade of investment.

Nevertheless, from what I have researched and read about Yuri Lopatinsky's financial dealings, investments and money pathways (as detailed to some extent in the Panama Papers) it seems clear that his source of wealth may be subject to greater scrutiny than others.

 

Has Woods Whurr conducted the appropriate level of due diligence with respect to Yuri Lopatinsky and money laundering risks?

Notwithstanding, would it be possible for Woods Whurr to investigate further Yuri Lopatinsky's connections to money laundering?  As part of your money laundering investigation into your client Yuri Loptainsky - when he was hired by you in 2019 and/or before - were Woods Whurr aware of the full scale of his financial activities?

 

Certainly, the comments made in the House of Commons on 17 January 2022 by Liam Byrne MP (as detailed in my report: Yuri Lopatinsky: The Spy Who Laundered $almoney for the Russian/Norwegian $almafia (& is a neighbour of the First Minister of $cotland)? dated 27 March 2022), were not available to Woods Whurr or myself.

Last Summer I received one of those phone calls which stick in your memory and get your heart racing.  "Don, we have received documentary evidence leaked by a whistleblower inside a hacking company proving that you were illegally targeted," said the award-winning investigative reporter. "The whistleblower leaked files on ca. 150 people around the world - including ca. 40 in the UK - who were the subject of illegal computer surveillance.  You were the only environmentalist on the list.  Do you have any thoughts on who might be behind the attack?"

 

 

 

As I stood in the queue at the chemists (I was picking up a prescription for my Dad), the first and last thought that leapt into my head was: Yuri Lopatinsky and Craig Anderson.  The timing of the hack certainly pointed to The Scottish Salmon Company who, according to a front-page report in The Herald in November 2021 and a Channel 4 News report in December 2021, had hired a private investigator in 2018 to carry out surveillance of Corin Smith and another unnamed activist (that would be me).

 

 

 

 

 

Almost a year after the tip-off from the investigative journalist, it is still not known with full legal certainty who ordered a hack on my computer (apparently each client would pay ca. £10,000 to a hacker in India via an intermediary to carry out the illegal surveillance).  If you're reading this blog and have any information which could finger the hacker and lead to a prosecution please email me via: [email protected]

 

 

 

An 'Insight Investigation' by The Sunday Times published in November 2022 exposed a global hacking network that targeted VIPs including the BBC's Chris Mason; Michel Platini, the former head of European football; Philip Hammond, then chancellor; and the president of Switzerland (if I was also targeted by hackers then I was in exalted company).  The Sunday Times article comes with this warning: "This article is the subject of legal complaints from each of the following: Jonas Rey; Athena Intelligence SA; Athena Intelligence & Risk Management Sarl, Aditya Jain; Diligence Global Business Intelligence; and Diligence International LLC, Diligence Intl Ltd, Diligence International Limited and Trefor Williams".

From the timing of emails leaked by the whistleblower it seems highly likely that my hacker was hired by The Scottish Salmon Company - then owned by shady 'Moscow broker' Yuri Lopatinsky - in conjunction with the private investigation of Corin Smith and myself.  The 51-page 'Intelligence Report' disclosed to Corin Smith by The Scottish Salmon Company (now named Bakkafrost Scotland) includes reference to the Dark Web as "today's playground for hackers and threat actors trading information on corporate targets for personal or espionage purposes":

 

 

 

The 'Intelligence Report' concluded by recommending further surveillance, intelligence on 'the lodge' and a "deep dive financial investigation" of both subjects (Corin Smith and myself):

 

 

 

Frustratingly, whilst Corin Smith was successful in obtaining his personal information as detailed in the 51-page 'Intelligence Report' by the time I requested the same information in December 2022 it has been deleted by Bakkafrost (The Scottish Salmon Company).   As Bakkafrost explained in March 2023:

In July 2022 Liam Byrne MP mysteriously backtracked on the Russian intelligence claims when he told the House of Commons:

"During a debate on 17 January, for instance, I said that Yuriy Lopatynskyy had questions to answer.  I am glad that he has now answered those questions, and has given me reassurances that he has never had links with the Russian intelligence services.  I am glad to be able to accept those assurances, and to apologise to him for any distress caused.  However, it is not a good situation when we do not have regulators, intelligence agencies and police services that are able to tackle this kind of dirty money". 

 

 

 

 

 

Yuri Lopatinsky's instrumental involvement in an 'immense' money laundering scheme in Russia is the stuff of legend - with Lopatinsky named as the 'Moscow broker' in the first edition of Bill Browder's book 'Red Notice' (his name was changed in subsequent editions).  $camon $cotland reported in April 2022:

The following search terms were used to search a Microsoft Exchange System and Kames Server (Hardware) : ‘Donald Charles Staniford’, ‘Don Staniford’, ‘Staniford’, ‘07771541826’, ‘[email protected]’, ‘[email protected]’, ‘$camon $cotland’, ‘Scottish Salmon Watch’.

The Responder is not aware of any abbreviations, IDs or nicknames, or, aside from the search terms used, any other means by which the Subject could be identified. It has not been possible therefore to conduct searches for abbreviations, IDs or nicknames in response to the DSAR. Further, any search for abbreviations, IDs or nicknames of which the Responder are unaware, for example where they have been used by a third party, would involve a disproportionate and excessively difficult task. Potentially qualifying data was identified in several digital documents. The names of third parties have been redacted in order to protect the rights and freedoms of others, in terms of section 45(4) of the 2018 Act. Crime information, in terms of paragraphs 2(1)(a) and 2(1)(b) of Part 1 of Schedule 2 of the 2018 Act, has been removed. Legally privileged information, in terms of paragraphs 19(a) and 19(b) of Part 4 of Schedule 2 of the 2018 Act, has been removed. The documents to be disclosed to the Subject as part of this response are in 5 PDF bundles and 4 zipped files. These are named, respectively, ‘Bundle 1’, ‘Bundle 2’, ‘Bundle 3’, ‘Bundle 4’, ‘Bundle 5’,’ Zip File 1, ‘Zip File 2’, ‘Zip File 3’, Zip File 4’. Bundle 1 is attached to this email which is headed ‘Response to DSAR, Email 1’. Such Subject data as is held by the Responder is used to respond to questions from the Subject and others on environmental issues relating to the marine aquaculture activities of the Responder and for the Responder’s legitimate business interests.

All documents containing Subject data held by the Responder are either correspondence from the Subject or correspondence between the Subject and employees of Kames or correspondence among employees of Kames or digital recordings by Kames of the Subject on Kames’ property without authorisation or are publicly available documents. No Subject data has been obtained by the Responder without the Subject’s knowledge from any other source.

Very limited Subject data is held by the Responder. The categories of Subject data held include: the Subject’s name, the Subject’s location (at specified or unknown times), the Subject’s occupation, the Subject’s reputation, the Subject’s beliefs associated with marine aquaculture and information contained in publicly available documents made publicly available by the Subject.

Subject data has been disclosed to employees of Kames principally. Reference has been made to the Subject’s activities in correspondence sent to Police Scotland. Reference has been made to the Subject’s activities in correspondence with other companies involved in marine aquaculture in Scotland.

Subject data is held for up to 7 years. Subject data is held for no longer than is necessary for the purposes for which the Subject data is used. Kames is committed to the regular review of personal data, which includes the Subject data, it holds.

When Corin Smith filed 'Subject Access Requests' (SARs) with salmon farming companies back in 2021 he cleverly opened the floodgates to a mass of sensitive information - dubbed 'Salmongate' and featured in The Ferret and The Herald.   SARs filed in December 2022 by myself - as Don Staniford and Director of $camon $cotland (formerly Scottish Salmon Watch) - have dredged up more interesting emails and other information held by the $almafia.   Sometimes SAR disclosures throw up more questions than answers.  For example, a SAR disclosure by Bakkafrost on 16 March 2023 detailed a minute of a 'Mainland North' meeting referring to "a known activist and associate of Don Staniford":

The news reported yesterday (2 June 2023) that the Aquaculture Stewardship Council has doubled the number of salmon farms in Scotland certified as 'responsible' in little more than a year illustrates the shameless greenwashing of Scottish salmon.  The certification scam is now so extensive in Scotland - with 40 salmon farms now certified and a further 18 in the pipeline for 2023 - that the ASC is running out of green wash. 

 

 

 

$camon $cotland was in London in late April and decided to visit the ASC's UK office in Gloucester Street - only to find that the prestigious address was home not to plush office space but to an anonymous post office box where mail is forwarded to the ASC in the Netherlands!
