Is it standard industry practice to spill morts all over the deck of the feed barge prior to incineration (as seen in the video footage)?

 

Is it a breach of biosecurity procedures to rinse the mort bin in the sea after all the morts have been burned in the incinerator (as seen in the video footage)?

 

 

Have inspectors taken any action against Scottish Sea Farms for welfare abuse, mortality disposal breaches and/or biosecurity breaches at Shuna Point salmon farm?

$camon $cotland visited Shuna Point salmon farm on Tuesday evening (16 May) and during the afternoon we witnessed at least 4 tonnes of morts being uplifted and incinerated.  Preliminary video footage is attached to this email. 

 

This site operated by Scottish Sea Farms is in Loch Linnhe north of Oban near Appin - details via:

Standing on the cages, we saw lesions and flanks missing on the sides of salmon - as well as dead cod and wrasse floating dead on the surface of cages. Lice infestation was apparent in the dead fish filmed inside the bins stored on the top deck of the feed barge. Inverlussa's Geraldine Mary was on site lifting up tonnes of dead fish and the Inter Caledonia was moored North of the site.

 

Further video footage and photos are being uploaded and I can pass on over the coming days - I am still in the field and do not have my laptop but wanted to communicate how urgent the problem is.

 

Suffice to say that $camon $cotland views the situation as an emergency with the disease disaster and welfare abuse at a critical point. Please visit the salmon farm this week to take samples for disease analysis and gauge the level of the problem.

 

$camon $cotland believes that Scottish Sea Farms (Norskott Havbruk) - exclusive supplier to M&S - has a huge disease, mortality and welfare problem at Shuna Point salmon farm.  We belive that Scottish Sea Farms is in breach of the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 (Section 19: unnecessary suffering; and Section 24: ensuring the welfare of animals).

 

Please visit Shuna Point salmon farm urgencies or all the evidence will have been burned in the incinerator - Scottish Sea Farms is like a serial killer destroying the evidence. And Shuna Point salmon farm is currently a crime scene. 

 

Please intervene now to stop the unnecessary suffering and welfare abuse of hundreds of thousands of Atlantic salmon.

Just to clarify 

Nothing has changed for the better safety wise at Marine Harvest / Mowi.

At the time of Clive's death the Health and Safety department consisted of 3 persons.

Now it only contains one person along with the former Health & Safety Manager retained in a part time self employed basis.

This is due to Ben Hadfield MD only concerned with minimising the amount of full time employees (FTE) within Mowi.

Health and Safety is not his priority!

The MAIB found there was no effective safety management system in place, there still isn't!

Regular man overboard drills are still not conducted throughout the company.

There is no longer an effective training system in place.

In order to save costs new members of staff watch safety and training  videos remotely (or to be very blunt, pretend to watch them).

For the PR department of Mowi to say 'we all continue to be deeply affected by Clive's death' is both offensive and insulting.

Health and Safety will NEVER be a priority within Mowi whilst Ben Hadfield is MD.

Whistleblower Hotline Launched - please dish the dirt on salmon pharming!

 

 

Campaigners have launched a hotline for whistleblowers wanting to dish the dirt on the salmon farming industry in Scotland.  Stickers asking for information are being posted across the Highlands & Islands of Scotland with adverts being placed in newspapers in Argyll, Lochaber, Wester Ross, Skye, Orkney, Shetland and the Outer Hebrides.  

 

 

 

Don Staniford of $camon Scotland said:

“Calling all whistleblowers – please dish the dirt on welfare abuse, mass mortalities, disease problems, corporate negligence, illegal chemical use and fishy goings on down on the salmon farm.  Photographic and video evidence is especially welcomed so we can expose the horrors of salmon farming.  If you’ve signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement or simply want to remain anonymous please use our tip-line or online contact form”.

 

 

Matt Mellen of Ecohustler said:

“Our readers and their social networks are very concerned about how salmon are farmed in UK waters.  We set up a petition calling for Marks and Spencer to come clean about the harm caused by factory farming salmon and stop labeling it ‘responsibly sourced’.  Over 100k people signed the petition.  Areas around salmon farms are severely affected and sustainable local businesses like tourism operations and small scale fishers are suffering.  We want to provide these people with a discreet way of sharing their issues.  Ecohustler.com will be offering the stickers for free in our online shop.”

 

 

 

Background:

 

Back in 2000, workers Jackie Mackenzie and Jonathan Davis blew the whistle on illegal use of toxic chemicals by Ardessie Salmon in Wester Ross leading to the salmon farmer being kicked out of the industry’s quality scheme.

In 2017, a whistleblower tipped off the BBC about mass mortalities at Norskott Havbruk (Scottish Sea Farms) in Loch Kishorn.

In 2018, industry whistleblowers leaked photographs of mass mortalities at Marine Harvest (Mowi) and welfare and hygiene abuse by The Scottish Salmon Company (Bakkafrost). 

In 2019, a BBC Panorama investigation was sourced by information leaked by whistleblowers.

In 2020, a Mowi insider blew the whistle on the illegal killing of seals. 

In 2021, a whistleblower inside Norskott Havbruk (Scottish Sea Farms) provided information on the illegal killing of a seal in Loch Spelve on the Isle of Mull.

In 2021, a whistleblower who worked for Mowi leaked photos and video from South West Shuna salmon farm in the Sound of Jura.

In 2022, a whistleblower issued an alert to mass mortalities at The Scottish Salmon Company (Bakkafrost) in Applecross.

Norwegian giant Mowi - which made an operating profit that passed the €1 billion mark in 2022 - has been hit with an £800,000 fine in Scotland over the death of worker Clive Hendry.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch reported in December 2021 that another incident - involving the grounding and flooding of a tanker in March 2020 at Mowi's Kyleakin feed factory -  "identified safety management issues at Mowi’s Kyleakin facility, including that the Port Marine Safety Code was not fully implemented".  "Safety recommendations have been made to Mowi (Scotland) to ensure that operations at the Kyleakin facility are conducted in accordance with the Port Marine Safety Code, and to consider upgrading the area to Statutory Harbour Authority," reported MAIB.

Please pass this complaint onto the relevant department (ASI and LRQA are both copied into this complaint and it has been emailed also to: [email protected]).

$camon Scotland’s complaint is a very simple one and is evidenced via the juxtaposition of the ASC’s ‘Salmon Standard’ vs data published by Marine Scotland via Scotland’s Aquaculture in relation to mass escapes and a recent Freedom of Information disclosure by the Scottish Government.

I am not familiar with the compliance or audit process.  But suffice to say that any forensic examination of ASC-certified salmon farms in Scotland - and those currently being audited - is likely to uncover other non-compliances.

If the ASC - and the certification and compliance bodies - wish to conduct due diligence of salmon farms in Scotland the Scottish Government publishes mortality, disease, lice and other case information via: https://www.gov.scot/collections/publication-of-fish-health-inspectorate-information/

Other data on escapes, biomass breaches, toxic chemical use, benthic pollution etc is published via Scotland's Aquaculture: http://aquaculture.scotland.gov.uk/data/data.aspx

Salmon Scotland also publishes mortality data via: https://www.salmonscotland.co.uk/reports

Freedom of Information - as used by $camon $cotland - is also powerful tool to extract information from Marine Scotland, SEPA, Nature Scotland, APHA and other agencies which salmon farming companies such as Mowi, Bakkafrost and Scottish Sea Farms may be reluctant to disclose and share with the ASC via the audit process. 

It seems patently clear that the ASC is not following due diligence - and is being far from responsible - when it comes to auditing and monitoring compliance by salmon farms in Scotland. 

You only have to take a quick glance at mortality rates on salmon farms across Scotland (online here) and cross-reference to see which salmon farms are already certified by the ASC (online here) to see how irresponsible the ASC certification process really is.
