Does the salmon farming industry still not recognise the fact - as detailed by @scotgov based on reports submitted by salmon farms - that over 25% of salmon die each year inside sea cages across Scotland? https://t.co/mqMZETNO66 @marinescotland @ScotlandSalmon @TavishScott https://t.co/TMdVEdB0K5 pic.twitter.com/QH38VIfC9q

Don Staniford, Director of $camon $cotland, said:
"This latest survey cannot hide the fact that millions of farmed salmon - perhaps as many as 50 million per year - are dying cruel deaths in sea cages, smolt farms and hatcheries across Scotland. Salmon farming is a welfare nightmare which must be closed down as a matter of urgency. The Scottish Government must force salmon farms to disclose the number of all dead fish even if the publication of mortality information is deemed 'commercially damaging' and not collected by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Salmon farming production this year is forecast to fall dramatically due to infectious diseases, mass mortalities and lice infestations. How on earth can a farming sector with a mortality rate in excess of 25% be marketed as 'responsible' via RSPCA Assured, the Soil Association and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council? Salmon farming in Scotland is dead in the water!"
