Official data published by the Scottish Government's Fish Health Inspectorate on 4 May shows that Norwegian giant Mowi - certified as 'responsibly sourced' via RSPCA Assured and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council - has reported nearly 10 million dead farmed salmon in Scotland since it was rebranded in January 2019 (Mowi changed their name due to what their CEO admitted was "negative consumer perception" in the name Marine Harvest).
Since January 2019 (data published up to the early April 2022), Mowi has filed 516 'Mortality Event Reports' with the Scottish Government detailing 9,814,763 dead farmed salmon with over 1.74 million farmed salmon morts already in 2022 (data on dead cleaner fish which is estimated at several million per year at Mowi is shamefully not reported). Here's the largest mass mortality reports headed by Mowi's Lochailort and Inchmore hatcheries (note that not all dead farmed salmon are reported - only mass mortality incidents over 1% - due to industry lobbying in 2013 arguing that disclosure of all mortalities would be 'commercially damaging'):
Mowi are blaming poor quality imported ova (eggs) for their mortality problems. Fish Farming Expert reported (11 May 2022):
In October 2018, The Sunday Mail reported that 500,000 farmed salmon had died at Mowi's flagship hatchery at Inchmore - opened only a few months earlier by Scotland's Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy, Fergus Ewing.
Despite Mowi's appalling track record, the Aquaculture Stewardship Council recently awarded 'responsibly farmed' certification at Mowi's salmon farms in Loch Alsh (at Ardintoul and Sron).
Mowi's Ardintoul salmon farm - accredited by the ASC on 20 April 2022 - has filed 27 'Mortality Event Reports' since January 2019 totalling 420,561 dead farmed salmon. Here's the most recent 'Mortality Event Reports' which also detail the use of antibiotics, toxic chemicals and infectious diseases:
When Scottish Salmon Watch visited Mowi's disease-ridden salmon farm at Ardintoul in Loch Alsh 'Special Area of Conservation' on 2 November 2019 we discovered bins full of dead salmon.
Mowi's other salmon farm in Loch Alsh (Sron) - certified by the ASC on 28 March 2022 - has filed 12 'Mortality Event Reports' since January 2019 totalling 138,318 dead farmed salmon:
Deaths in Loch Alsh have not been restricted to farmed salmon and cleaner fish but have sadly extended to seals and even Mowi's own workers.

Tourist operator Nigel Smith has reported seals slaughtered in Loch Alsh (a Special Area of Conservation and Marine Protected Area) with shocking photos of dead seals naming and shaming Marine Harvest (since renamed Mowi).
