The Scottish Salmon Company - one of Scotland's largest salmon farming companies and a member of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation - has officially reported to the Scottish Government that seals are "spooking" thousands of farmed salmon "causing them to injure themselves".
Scottish Salmon claim scary seals are 'spooking' thousands of farmed salmon to death. "The seals are not accessing the fish but they are present around the site & were spooking them causing them to injure themselves" https://t.co/BY89Akfn71 @salmon_scottish #Scapegoat #Bollocks pic.twitter.com/StOap5nF0a

The unbelievable ghost story spun by The Scottish Salmon Company - owned by Faroese/Norwegian investors - comes in the wake of claims by Tavish Scott (Chief Executive of the 99% foreign owned/controlled 'Scottish' salmon farming industry) that seals are becoming "increasingly aggressive" and represent an "injury threat" to workers.
Here's a cute picture of lobbyist @tavishscott with his baby son next to a cute picture of a baby seal with his mum. Tavish lobbies for salmon farmers to slaughter "aggressive" seals leaving orphaned pups across Scotland. Please boycott Scottish salmon! https://t.co/SezWDFPMZ2 pic.twitter.com/yYsLnhqjE5
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) July 5, 2021
The extraordinary claims are contained in 'Mortality Event Reports' published by the Scottish Government's Fish Health Inspectorate.
In March 2021, Scottish Salmon Watch published photos of seals killed by salmon farms obtained via Freedom of Information - including seals killed at The Scottish Salmon Company's Vuia Mor salmon farm in Loch Roag.
Next time you see Scottish salmon in the supermarket please think of 1,000+ seals killed on salmon farms since 2011. Seals are well used to being smeared as scapegoats.
If seals could actually talk then maybe the public would hear them complaining in person or filing lawsuits for defamation via their lawyers.
Salmon farmers in Scotland have taken the blame game to a new level, however, with the chief lobbyist for the 'Scottish' salmon farming lobby calling them "increasingly aggressive" in a letter to the Scottish Government in October 2020 and ruthlessly demanding that they needed to be killed as they represented a "clear injury threat to our staff".
Tavish Scott (lobbyist for Scottish Salmon justifying the slaughter of seals): "Rogue seals in Scottish coastal waters are becoming increasingly aggressive...they carry a clear injury threat to our staff" @tavishscott https://t.co/SezWDFPMZ2 #Bollocks #Bullshit #BloodOnHands pic.twitter.com/v8IqNEZOw3

The Sunday Mail reported (4 July 2021):
Professor Callum Roberts, of Exeter Uni, said: “These animals are friendly. The salmon farms are trying to put a spin on their indefensible practice of shooting seals” @Daily_Record https://t.co/byC8ot3Xqh @tavishscott @SSPOsays @marinescotland @HamishMacdonell @SealScotland
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) July 4, 2021
John Robins of Animal Concern: “Tavish Scott has shown ex-politicians might well get high-powered jobs because of who they know not what they know. He seems to believe seals are becoming aggressive & teaching each other to attack fish farmers” https://t.co/byC8ot3Xqh @tavishscott
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) July 4, 2021
When Tavish Scott was appointed Chief Executive of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation in September 2020 it seems that one of his first tasks was to spin the seal into a convenient scapegoat for the salmon farming industry's mortality problems.
"We need to know what we can do - & what we cannot do - to manage seal predation" & prevent "increased aggression observed from rogue seals" wrote @tavishscott to @scotgov in October 2020 "They carry a clear injury threat to our staff" @SSPOsays https://t.co/SezWDFPMZ2 #Bullshit pic.twitter.com/R3iyoUWFIo
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) July 5, 2021
Data published by the Scottish Government's Fish Health Inspectorate details tens of thousands of farmed salmon "spooked" to death by seals during 2021 (according to 'Mortality Event Reports' filed by The Scottish Salmon Company).
Scotland's 'aggressive' seals are now so scary that salmon farmers report they're "spooking" tens of thousands of sensitive farmed salmon to death! @marinescotland @SSPOsays @salmon_scottish https://t.co/oZtlH0CRpV @MairiMcAllan @ScotGovNetZero @scotgov pic.twitter.com/zaQv4cjT1G

Here's 'Mortality Event Reports' filed by salmon farming companies - and reported online by the Scottish Government's Fish Health Inspectorate - where seals and predators are cited as reasons for mortalities.
There's nothing like a good scapegoat to divert attention away from a company's own failures.
Scottish Salmon Watch revealed in November 2020 that The 'Scottish' Salmon Company had officially reported over 5 million dead salmon since 2017.
Over 5 Million Dead 'Scottish' Salmon Since 2017 @salmon_scottish - sponsored by investors from Norway, Sweden, Faroes, USA, Denmark, Belgium & Luxembourg! @Folketrygdfond @NorwayMFA @fiskeridir @NFdep @Try_Lochlander @SSPOsays @FergusEwingMSP @strathearnrose @marinescotland pic.twitter.com/37ehamHX24
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) November 13, 2020
The reporting of "seals spooking fish" appears to have crept in over the last year as the salmon farming sector mounts a PR campaign against 'aggressive' seals.
Are seals "aggressive" and a "clear injury threat" to salmon farmers (as seriously suggested by lobbyist @tavishscott) or do seals deserve our protection from cruel & bloodthirsty salmon farmers in Scotland? @SSPOsays @nature_scot @scotgov @ptfss https://t.co/SezWDFPMZ2 pic.twitter.com/AvMxiQu5cW
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) July 5, 2021
It seems that some companies are more prone to blaming seals - or perhaps they are operating in a manner which leaves them more open to seal attacks? Rather like lazy school children who blame their dog for failing to hand in their homework.
"Seals are known as the dogs of the sea & like dogs, they can be inquisitive, friendly & playful!" @Ross_McLaren_ @BBCScotland "There can’t be many better underwater experiences than diving with seals!" https://t.co/R137RtUE0E

Shame on @tavishscott for promoting seal killing! pic.twitter.com/dWp717qb80
Whilst Mowi (Marine Harvest) have not cited 'seals' or 'predation' in over 400 'Mortality Event Reports', The Scottish Salmon Company routinely blames seals for mortalities and even escapes of farmed salmon.

Why the difference? @SSPOsays @ScotlandMowi pic.twitter.com/K4NecKKRid
In January 2021, The Scottish Salmon Company claimed that "seal gangs" had caused an escape of 52,000 farmed salmon off Portree. Intrafish reported (14 January 2021):
BBC News reported (14 January 2021):
In February 2021, greedy salmon farmers demanded compensation for seal attacks.

— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) February 19, 2021
Instead of blaming seals for mass mortalities, the salmon farming sector should look more closely at who is really to blame. The fact is that salmon farms across Scotland have patently failed to invest in anti-predator nets to keep seals out - rather like a farmer blaming a fox for killing his chickens when he fails to put up a fence.
"By failing to install predator exclusion nets to keep seals at a distance from cages holding their stock, salmon farmers have in my view been in breach of the Animal Health & Welfare Act 2006 since the day it came into force" (John Robins of Animal Concern) @heraldscotland pic.twitter.com/gVYt8roFN0
