Welfare Complaint Filed Vs Mowi's RSPCA Assured "Responsibly Sourced" Scottish Salmon

 

 

 

 

Scottish Salmon Watch today (19 July 2021) filed a welfare complaint against Mowi's RSPCA Assured Scottish salmon.

Scottish Salmon Watch followed Scottish Government and SSPO approved biosecurity measures and safety protocols when filming - we disinfected (with Virkon) our kayak which was launched safely and at a distance outside Mowi's lease area.  Here's ground-truthing video from Saturday evening (17 July 2021) at Mowi's REDACTED salmon farm ca. 6pm when no staff were present on site:

Suffice to say that Scottish Salmon Watch found clear evidence of welfare abuse at all four RSPCA Assured salmon farms - with dead salmon and cleaner fish lying belly up in the cages, lice-infestation of both farmed salmon and cleaner fish and evidence of physical damage to farmed salmon clearly visible when filming at the cages (including eye damage, head damage, snout damage and fin damage).

Please also note that our filming was carried out in poor visibility (it was misty), in snatched sessions (when we filmed at REDACTED at 6.30pm on Friday we had to leave when we noticed a salmon farm worker on site) and we only filmed on a 2 metre telescopic pole (filming in deeper water would be advisable).  Hence Scottish Salmon Watch only just scratched the surface of the welfare abuse which appears endemic in these RSPCA Assured salmon farms.

Scottish Salmon Watch would strongly encourage site inspections early this week before Mowi bury the evidence of welfare abuse.

The RSPCA's recently published farmed salmon standards are eye-opening in terms of how the salmon farming industry gets away with the mass murder (or theriocide) of millions of RSPCA Assured 'welfare-friendly' and "responsibly sourced" Scottish salmon.  RSPCA Assured Scottish salmon accounts for ca. 60-70% of salmon farming production in Scotland - representing over £500,000 in annual income to the RSPCA from salmon farming companies - and all salmon farming companies except Organic Sea Harvest are signed up to the scheme.

2020: The Year of Diseased Scottish Salmon - 27,000 Tonnes of Dead Fish, the Worst On Record!

 



 

It's official - Scottish salmon is the worst ever!  Official data - published by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency via 'Scotland's Aquaculture' which is sourced from monthly returns submitted by salmon farming companies - reveals that mortalities on salmon farms during 2020 exceeded a staggering 27,000 tonnes (an estimated 20 million dead salmon).   That's more than double the 10,000 tonnes of morts reported in 2013; almost four times more than the 7,000 tonnes reported in 2010 and the worst on record (2019 and 2017 were both just over 25,000 tonnes)!

Here's the worst monthly mortalities (by weight) reported on salmon farms during 2020 - headed by the Faroese/Norwegian owned 'Scottish' Salmon Company followed by Isle of Skye Salmon (owned by Norway's Grieg Seafood) and Norwegian-owned giants Mowi and Scottish Sea Farms.

Mowi (who changed their name from Marine Harvest in 2019 due to "negative consumer perception") head the list of mortalities by company since 2013.  These six companies - all foreign owned/controlled - account for 99% of 'Scottish' salmon farming production.

Six out of the top twenty monthly mortalities since 2002 when data was made available were reported during 2020 - with The Scottish Salmon Company's salmon farm at Sgian Dubh in Loch Striven in August 2020 heading the list of shame.

No wonder The Scottish Salmon Company warn the public to keep away from their disease-ridden salmon farms.

To put the scale of Scottish salmon's mort mountain into perspective, over a quarter (26%) of all farmed salmon in the sea phase of production are dying before they reach harvest size.    BBC Countryfile reported in December 2020:

 

 

 

 

Here's the source data as reported in October 2020 via the Scottish Government's Annual Fish Farm Production Survey 2019 - detailing survival rate ranges between a low of 71.8% (i.e. 28.2% mortality) in 2007 and a high of 85.4% (i.e. 14.6% mortality) in 2012.   The survival rate drastically differs between regions too with survival in in 2017 as low as 58.2% (i.e. 41.8% mortality) in the North West and as high as 80.8% (i.e. 19.2% mortality) in the South West.  The latest mortality rate we have data for is 2017 which reported only 73.8% survival i.e. 26.2% mortality.

Organic Scamon Makes Waves Off the Isle of Skye

 



 

The public backlash against the scam that is 'organic' salmon farming is featured in today's Mail on Sunday (11 July 2021).

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday earlier this week I commented (as Director of Scottish Salmon Watch):

"The SNP's lobbying on behalf of disease-ridden salmon farms is toxic politics at its very worst.  Organic Sea Harvest is a sham, scam and consumer con.  So-called 'organic' salmon farming is an oxymoron and a figment of the marketing men's toxic imagination.  Shame on the Soil Association for allowing the lobster-killing chemical Deltamethrin to be used on organic salmon farms.  Mass mortalities and lice infestations are already plaguing OSH's 'organic' operations and further expansion will only exacerbate the problem. 'Organic' Sea Harvest is merely a front for Dutch, Canadian and Norwegian investors who want to exploit Scotland's green and clean image.  Consumers should boycott 'organic' salmon embalmed in toxic chemicals"

A legal petition to be published for public inspection by the US Environmental Protection Agency on Monday (12 July 2021) should have Benchmark - the Norwegian-owned company who has been caught lobbying the Scottish Environment Protection Agency to use Imidicaloprid in salmon farming in Scotland - feeling a little hot under the collar.

My MSP is James Dornan, who advised me to refer my concern to Scottish Ministers.

I draw your attention to this Guardian article, explaining that Marine Scotland and SEPA appear minded to raise no objection to the introduction of the Clean Treat system by fish farm biocide treatment company Benchmark- https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/may/27/novichok-for-insects-may-be-approved-for-scottish-fish-farms?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other. We ask you to oppose this, if it comes before the Scottish Parliament.

The treatment includes the neonicotinoid based chemical, Imidacloprid. Neonicotinoids are banned in the EU (and in the UK while in the EU) but, incredibly, not for use in water, after heavy lobbying by pharma tech giant Bayer. The chemical is, nevertheless, found in animal flea treatment and has already made its way into English water courses, despite its ban in farming.  Neonicotinoids are extremely dangerous to insect life and have proved disastrous to entire ecosystems in places where they have been introduced widely, such as Japan. They are very effective against lice on industrial farmed salmon, however, which is why the big salmon farming companies, who seem to have an unhealthy grip on the Scottish Government, are desperate to use it.

The linked article summarises the issues well but I believe there are other pieces in the Scottish press and, of course, Private Eye has reported the numerous salmon farm pollutions, chemical releases, and incidents of storm-damaged cages releasing thousands of infected fish, as well as the industry’s relentless efforts to expand,  despite its dreadful record.

We hope that the Scottish Government ministers will decide against trialling this treatment which, we understand, may be the subject of an application by the treatment company, Benchmark.

It appears game ova for Norwegian egg imports into salmon farms across Scotland - Iceland and Ireland have well and truly cracked the market for 'Scottish' salmon replacing imports from disease-ridden Norway. 

 

 

 

 

A Freedom of Information (FOI) disclosure by the Scottish Government published online in April 2021 reveals that 'Scottish' salmon is now sourced predominantly from imported ova (eggs) from Iceland and Ireland substituting Norway (due to ongoing risks of the spread of Infectious Salmon Anaemia).   The last reported consignments of ova imported from Norway were in April 2020 into hatcheries operated by Scottish Sea Farms (Norskott Havbruk) at Knock on the Isle of Mull and Cooke Aquaculture at Rysa on Orkney - and another shipment from AquaGen in Norway to Cooke's Rysa hatchery on Orkney in January 2021.

Replacing imported Norwegian ova with imported Icelandic (and Irish) ova, however, is merely switching from one disease risk to another.    Science Advances reported in May 2021 on the spread of Piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) from Norwegian salmon farming to wild salmon in Canada "fuelled by aquacultural transmission" (i.e. infected farmed salmon which was imported as ova from Norway to Canada).

The Scottish Salmon Company - one of Scotland's largest salmon farming companies and a member of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation - has officially reported to the Scottish Government that seals are "spooking" thousands of farmed salmon "causing them to injure themselves".  

 

 

 

 

The unbelievable ghost story spun by The Scottish Salmon Company - owned by Faroese/Norwegian investors - comes in the wake of claims by Tavish Scott (Chief Executive of the 99% foreign owned/controlled 'Scottish' salmon farming industry) that seals are becoming "increasingly aggressive" and represent an "injury threat" to workers. 

 

 

 

 

 

The extraordinary claims are contained in 'Mortality Event Reports' published by the Scottish Government's Fish Health Inspectorate.

There's nothing like a good scapegoat to divert attention away from a company's own failures.

Scottish Salmon Watch revealed in November 2020 that The 'Scottish' Salmon Company had officially reported over 5 million dead salmon since 2017.

 

 

 

 

The reporting of "seals spooking fish" appears to have crept in over the last year as the salmon farming sector mounts a PR campaign against 'aggressive' seals. 

 

 

 

 

It seems that some companies are more prone to blaming seals - or perhaps they are operating in a manner which leaves them more open to seal attacks?  Rather like lazy school children who blame their dog for failing to hand in their homework.

Whilst Mowi (Marine Harvest) have not cited 'seals' or 'predation' in over 400 'Mortality Event Reports', The Scottish Salmon Company routinely blames seals for mortalities and even escapes of farmed salmon.   

 

 

 

 

In January 2021, The Scottish Salmon Company claimed that "seal gangs" had caused an escape of 52,000 farmed salmon off Portree.   Intrafish reported (14 January 2021):

Instead of blaming seals for mass mortalities, the salmon farming sector should look more closely at who is really to blame.   The fact is that salmon farms across Scotland have patently failed to invest in anti-predator nets to keep seals out - rather like a farmer blaming a fox for killing his chickens when he fails to put up a fence.

FOI Exposes Lobbying by 'Scottish' Salmon on Killing of Seals & Use of ADDs

 



 

Freedom of Information documents reveal the depths trigger-happy salmon farmers will go to in their bloodthirsty lust to defend the slaughter of seals on Scottish salmon farms (ca. 70% of which are certified as 'welfare friendly' via RSPCA Assured).
