Rest Assured - the RSPCA has been captured, co-opted & corrupted by the Salmafia

 

 

 

"Regulatory capture is an economic theory that says regulatory agencies may come to be dominated by the industries or interests they are charged with regulating," wrote Investopedia in March 2021.  "The result is that an agency, charged with acting in the public interest, instead acts in ways that benefit incumbent firms in the industry it is supposed to be regulating".  

 

 

 

 

 

Such 'capture theory' is an illuminating lens with which to view how RSPCA Assured (re-branded away from Freedom Foods in 2015) has been captured, co-opted and corrupted by the 'Scottish' salmon farming industry (99% of which is owned/controlled by six foreign companies). 

 

 

 

 

Regulatory capture - and corruption - is certainly not exclusive to disease-ridden salmon farming.  It has spread like a cancer all over the globe as corporate giants now rule the world.

In April 2021, Scottish Salmon Watch wrote to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs detailing serious regulatory failures in the policing of animal welfare laws on salmon farms.

 

 

 

 

The letter cited evidence of serious regulatory failings in welfare assessment of salmon farms obtained via Freedom of Information from the Animal & Plant Health Agency.

Yesterday's news that Mowi had been allowed to wriggle off the hook after clear video evidence of welfare abuse at four salmon farms is not surprising given how close to industry RSPCA Assured has become.

In early April 2021, the RSPCA's crack team of inspectors reinstated RSPCA Assured certification following a temporary suspension after Compassion in World Farming published video evidence of welfare abuse inside salmon farms across Scotland several weeks earlier.

When the RSPCA gave Scottish Sea Farms the all clear to carry abusing the welfare of thousands of farmed salmon at their RSPCA Assured salmon farm in Loch Spelve in May 2021 it did so again after only a short suspension of certification. 

 

 

 

 

 

Questions were asked about the RSPCA's "rigorous in-person inspection".

 

 

 

 

 

 

The free pass given to salmon farmers is not altogether surprising given the fact that a who's who of salmon farming industry representatives wrote the RSPCA's farmed salmon standards.

The SSPCA has also been infiltrated, co-opted and corrupted by the salmon farming lobby.  Shamefully, the Chairperson of the SSPCA is the head vet of Scottish Sea Farms - a company guilty of welfare abuse in Loch Creran in 2020.

The RSPCA's recently published farmed salmon standards are eye-opening in terms of how the salmon farming industry gets away with the mass murder (or theriocide) of millions of RSPCA Assured 'welfare-friendly' and "responsibly sourced" Scottish salmon.  RSPCA Assured Scottish salmon accounts for ca. 60-70% of salmon farming production in Scotland - representing over £500,000 in annual income to the RSPCA from salmon farming companies - and all salmon farming companies except Organic Sea Harvest are signed up to the scheme.

Exposed: 'Legal' Salmon Dump in North Uist Caught Importing Diseased Fish From the Mainland (& they've still not applied to SEPA for a pollution permit)!

 

 

 



 

When Bruce Sandison of The Salmon Farm Protest Group blew the whistle on the illegal dumping of diseased salmon in North Uist back in 2005, I bet he didn't think Whiteshore Cockles would still be raising a stink nearly two decades later.

Bruce Sandison (aka Old Trout in Private Eye) sadly died in 2016 - the year Whiteshore Cockles was given a six-month temporary derogation by the European Union to continue burying diseased farmed salmon at their stinky cesspool in North Uist.

As I reported earlier this month (3 July 2021),  we have a backdrop of the salmon farming industry - aided and abetted by the Scottish Government and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) - flouting EU law on the dumping of diseased salmon in landfill at Whiteshore Cockles.   No wonder the authorities have desperately attempted to bury the evidence of illegality. 

 

 

 

 

Despite the salmon farming industry's struggles to understand the "complexities in the area of waste disposal", the law is a simple if not sobering reality for companies such as Mowi, The Scottish Company and Loch Duart who are still using landfill disposal at Whiteshore Cockles in North Uist.    As a letter from Scottish Salmon Watch to Scottish Ministers in May 2021 and re-sent on 1 July 2021 pointed out:

Have you ever seen lumpsuckers eating the flesh of farmed salmon?
 
This video footage shot at Mowi's Poll Na Gille salmon farm on 17 July 2021 shows lumpsuckers foraging near a dead farmed salmon floating on the surface of a cage:

The lumpsuckers could just be hiding in the dead salmon or eating any lice on the carcass but it seems as if they may be feasting on the flesh.  Do you know if this has been reported?

Models and indicators are useful but there is no substitute for real life conditions captured by underwater surveillance shot inside salmon farms.   When Scottish Salmon Watch visited Mowi's Poll Na Gille salmon farm near Craobh Haven on 17 July 2021 we were shocked to find over a dozen dead lumpsucker 'cleaner fish' lying on the surface of one cage.   You certainly don't need to be a mathematical modeller to work out that this is evidence of serious welfare abuse.

When Scottish Salmon Watch filmed at a processing plant at South Shian operated by Scottish Sea Farms in September 2018 we were shocked to discover dead lumpsuckers:

And when Scottish Salmon Watch has filmed inside skips full of dead salmon we've always found dead cleaner fish - both wrasse and lumpsuckers.
