The CEO of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation @SSPOsays, Mr @TavishScott says it's a
"Pack of lies".
Make up you own mind who's the LIAR here. pic.twitter.com/C0T1aId4pn
To steal a joke from the legal and political profession, how do you know when a salmon farming lobbyist is lying?
When their lips move.
Tavish Scott, chief executive of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (the lobby group for the 99% foreign-owned 'Scottish' salmon farming industry - ca. 80% of which is controlled by Norwegian financial interests including Norway's Government Pension Fund), told a pack of lies last night on BBC Scotland's 'The Nine' (6 April 2021).
"Let's look at some of the specific claims this documentary makes," said BBC Scotland's Martin Geissler. "Don was talking there about the moment he climbs up a ladder and looks into a tank full of dead fish, it's what they call a mortality bin. It's like a skip of dead fish. It's not entirely clear in the wording of the documentary what percentage of the fish that are farmed end up in there but they're suggesting it's a lot. They say they die from lice infestatations, Chlamydia, heart disease, anaemia."
"No, no," interupts Tavish Scott.
"Is that true?" asked the BBC's Martin Geissler.
"No, it's absolutely not true," replied Tavish Scott. "It's one of the pack of lies that these extreme activists produce all the time, Martin. I am disappointed the BBC is giving it air time to this pack of lies tonight".
Scottish salmon "die from lice infestatations, Chlamydia, heart disease, anaemia" @seaspiracy "Is that true?" @BBCScotNine "No, it's absolutely not true," replied @tavishscott "It's one of the pack of lies that these extreme activists produce all the time" https://t.co/L0V3L4ubNu pic.twitter.com/P7cBaRB6Yg

Interupting: "The disease data is sourced from the Scottish Government" pointed out Don Staniford.
Best bit was @tavishscott denying that millions of his poor salmon die from lice, disease, chlamydia etc. @scotgov published figures say he’s lying. https://t.co/HjFNC2Uml8
— Salmon Scotland (@SalmonScotland) April 6, 2021
Here's the skinny on disease-ridden Scottish salmon - maybe Tavish should actually read the Fish Health Inspectorate's data? @marinescotland @SSPOsays https://t.co/wxw7mmiMo9 pic.twitter.com/2ZOn10kLmk
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) April 6, 2021
If Tavish Scott says it’s a pack of lies that millions of salmon are dying from lice infestation, disease etc .....what on earth ARE they dying from?@tavishscott - over to you..
— Salmon Scales Of Justice LLM (@SalmonPharming) April 6, 2021
If Tavish Scott took the time to read the mortality data and 'Case Information' on diseases published each month by the Scottish Government's Fish Health Inspectorate he would see that millions of Scottish salmon are dying each year from lice infestation, 'Gill Issues' (including Chlamydia, Proliferative Gill Inflammation and Amoebic Gill Disease), Pancreas Disease, Cardiomyopathy Syndrome, Heart & Skeletal Muscle Inflammation and mechanical torture treatments such as the Thermolicer and Hydrolicer.
Scottish Salmon Watch has written to BBC Scotland asking that Tavish Scott's "pack of lies" comment are investigated.
Tavish Scott @SSPOsays denies millions of Scottish salmon are dying from lice infestation & infectious diseases @seaspiracy @BBCScotNine

Yet, data published by @marinescotland shows millions of #Scottish #salmon die due to infectious diseases! https://t.co/L0V3L4ubNu #Liar #Lies pic.twitter.com/feFSb4NTw8
Anyone interested in ground-truthing Tavish Scott's pack of lies need look no further than the Scottish Government's Fish Health Inspectorate who publishes monthly data on mass mortalities (including millions of Scottish salmon killed by infectious diseases) and 'Case Information' detailing infectious diseases, viruses, pathogens and bacteria in Scottish salmon.
Lies, damned lies, and 'Scottish' salmon - how can you seriously claim that millions of Scottish salmon are not dying from infectious diseases when @marinescotland reports millions dying from infectious diseases? https://t.co/L0V3L4ubNu #Scottish #Scamon pic.twitter.com/HWxM4bRdOv
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) April 7, 2021
Scottish Salmon Watch reported last week (1 April 2021):
Corin Smith has calculated that caged salmon deaths rose from 4,421 tonnes in 2002 to 25,772 tonnes in 2019. “The volume of salmon dying prematurely on salmon farms in Scotland is now biblical in scale” @thetimes https://t.co/gf8GFOyBZz @SSPOsays @ScotlandMowi @salmon_scottish
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) April 1, 2021
Data published recently by the Scottish Government - sourced from inspections of salmon farms by the Fish Health Inspectorate - reveal that Tavish Scott is a bare-faced liar when he denied on BBC Scotland's 'The Nine' (6 April 2021) that Scottish salmon is dying from lice infestations and infectious diseases. For example, here's 'Case Information' reported by the Fish Health Inspectorate relating to an inspection of The Scottish Salmon Company (a member company of the SSPO represented by lobbyist Tavish Scott) in November 2020:
Fresh from Scottish Salmon's Plocropol salmon farm on the Isle of Harris - their "eyes had burst" reported @marinescotland with lesions, physical damage, Piscine Reovirus, lice infestation, torn fins & 80,000+ mortalitieshttps://t.co/1ZYSFmwryO @salmon_scottish @Try_Lochlander pic.twitter.com/VtLxqYulXW

The damning reports of diseased Scottish salmon detailing mass mortalities, viruses, pathogens, bacteria and welfare abuse go on and on and on (and just remember that these are reports published by the Scottish Government's Fish Health Inspectorate not by "extreme activists").

If Tavish Scott took the time to read the Fish Health Inspectorate reports - including damning photographic evidence of welfare abuse at RSPCA Assured salmon farms - maybe he would stop lying to the BBC and the Scottish public?
Edie Bowles @Animallawyersuk said the dossier, compiled by Don Staniford, a critic of salmon farming, indicated “systemic and obvious” pain & suffering that could justify legal action against @scotgov @MairiGougeon @SSPOsays https://t.co/ZuzAis8gEr @SundayTimesScot @ciwf @scotgp pic.twitter.com/RPVIAL3KlS

Gill diseases such as Amoebic Gill Disease, 'Complex Gill Disease' including Piscichlamydia, Epilethiocystis and other gill problems have hit salmon farming hard over the last few decades.
Yes - Piscichlamydia has hit salmon farming for a few decades. Just one of the many STDs (Salmon Transmissible Diseases) spread by the rampant expansion of salmon farming https://t.co/oWSKfRZmTX
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) April 6, 2021
Two Chlamydiales have previously been found to infect Atlantic salmon, Candidatus Piscichlamydia salmonis and Candidatus Clavichlamydia salmonicola. Both develop intracellularly in cyst-like inclusions in gill cells, generally referred to as epitheliocysts https://t.co/dvjfuA7JWL

The truth seems to be a foreign country when Tavish Scott is interviewed by the BBC. When grilled on BBC Countryfile in December 2020, Tavish Scott refused to acknowledge the fact (as sourced and published from Scottish Government data published in October 2020) that the mortality rate on Scottish sea cage salmon farms was 26%.
"I don't recognise your figure (26% mortality)" says @tavishscott to @joe_crowley @BBCCountryfile https://t.co/orFCNlIgG7
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) December 7, 2020
Even Mr Magoo would recognise the fact that over a quarter of all Scottish salmon are dying in just the sea-phase of production! @marinescotland @SSPOsays pic.twitter.com/OwDboVoqgA
26% mortality rate on Scottish salmon farms (in just the sea phase of production) - that means one in four RSPCA certified salmon are dying a horrible death! @rspcaassured @SSPOsays @marinescotland https://t.co/G4dXeILsTk @BBCCountryfile @joe_crowley @SalmonTroutCons @scotgp pic.twitter.com/4Nm8CV3fLA
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) December 7, 2020
Tavish Scott also struggled to deal with the facts when interviewed by Holyrood Magazine in November 2020:
"We must confront the arguments where they lack fact" says @tavishscott @HolyroodDaily https://t.co/iIpHiZNRyE
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) December 1, 2020
How many mortalities does @SSPOsays report each year?
Fact - zero (disclosure would be "commercially damaging") @ScottishEPA @TerryAHearn https://t.co/RJ4HGLLBWx pic.twitter.com/0LmEKS5zRA
In November 2020, Scottish Salmon Watch estimated that 42 million farmed salmon die annually on salmon farms in Scotland (from hatch as eggs to 'catch' in sea cages) with ca. 20 million deaths in hatcheries and ca. 20 million in the sea phase of production.
Alexa, how many salmon die each year on Scottish salmon farms? 42 million* https://t.co/jRQzhheju6
— Don Staniford (@TheGAAIA) November 11, 2020
Sadly we don't know for sure as the answer is deemed "commercially damaging" by @sspo!
Will @ScottishEPA & @marinescotland force disclosure? @salmon_scottish @rspcaassured pic.twitter.com/fua9nkM6g3
Sadly, numbers of mortalities of Scottish salmon is not officially reported after the SSPO lobbied the Scottish Environment Protectiojn Agency in 2013 claiming that disclosure would be "commercially damaging".
If you're looking for data on numbers of @rspcaassured dead farmed salmon in Scotland they don't exist - in 2013 @SSPOsays lobbied @ScottishEPA not to disclose mortalities as it was deemed commercially damaging! https://t.co/cDEyvS04dO @strathearnrose @salmon_scottish @scotgp pic.twitter.com/FICRbrpGXJ

Whilst Tavish Scott blindly ignores the truth, a scientific paper published last month in Nature reported:
"Pathogens, parasites, and pests (PPP) are a chronic risk for the aquaculture sector, and the intensification of production and increased trade and supply chain integration since 2000 have amplified these risks," reported researchers. "Even in sectors in which major investments and progress have been made in the detection, avoidance, and treatment of PPP, new threats frequently emerge. For example, the salmon aquaculture industry has successfully controlled some diseases, such as infectious pancreatic necrosis virus and infectious salmon anaemia, but other diseases and parasites (for example, salmon rickettsial syndrome and sea lice) remain costly for many producers and damaging to wild salmon as treatment options are either unavailable or the target organism has become resistant to treatment"
