Marion Shoard's seminal book 'Theft of the Countryside' in 1980 explored how modern farming was killing off wildlife and damaging the English countryside (in much the same vein as Rachel Carson's 'Silent Spring' published back in 1962 exposed the horrors of chemically-embalmed farming). Now with the advent of factory fish farming we're witnessing a new era of chemical warfare via salmon farming - dubbed the 'Silent Spring of the Sea'.
Whilst many of the impacts of modern salmon farming are 'out of sight, out of mind' and invisible to the public eye (except for videos capturing the shocking waste impacts on the sea-bed and news reports detailing toxic pollution on shellfish living near salmon farms) the plastic pollution from salmon farms is becoming more and more visible as plastics litter the coastline.
Plastic pollution is no more visible than on Teithil Beach which borders the Loch Creran Marine Special Area of Conservation.
Here's more on how Gael Force Fusion are looking to expand into the nearby Scottish Sea Life Sanctuary.
And here's a video on the cruelty of sea cage salmon farming.
And here's another video of plastic pollution at a salmon farm on Skye:
Here's more videos shot in the Loch Creran area - where Norwegian-owned Scottish Sea Farms farm fake Lochmuir salmon for Marks & Spencer.
