Considering all the bullshit on show this week at the North Atlantic Seafood Forum in Bergen, Norway, it was surprising that salmon farming industry leaders were reluctant to accept their hard-earned 'Scamon' awards.
Security refused entry even though the conference organizers had accepted registration for the event - a case of "If you're name's down, you're still not coming in!"
Executives from Grieg Seafood, who double-bagged the "Scam of the Year" award for their Skuna Bay "craft-raised" salmon and the "Lord Voldemort" award for killing sea lions and seals in Canada and Scotland, hid like Lepers.
Former salmon farmer Donal Maguire, now head of the Irish Government agency BIM who is promoting a 15,000 tonne "organic" salmon farm in Galway Bay, hid under his coat and then put up his hand to block a photo being taken when presented with his "Best Supporting Government Agency" award on Thursday (7 March).
BIM sponsored the conference along with other salmon farming companies like Marine Harvest, Grieg and EWOS (Cermaq).
Cermaq CEO Jon Hindar, winner of the "When In a Hole Keep Digging" award, at least smiled for the camera and said "My kids would love this!".
However, Cermaq's CEO refused to accept the award (in recognition of Cermaq's PR blunders in Canada and the ongoing "Salmon Farming Kills" lawsuit).
Marine Harvest owner John Fredriksen failed to show up to collect his "Super-Size Salmon Scamon" award.
And Marine Harvest's CEO Alf-Helge Aarskog ducked out of a side door as soon as his financial presentation had finished leaving his "Marine Harmfest" award gathering sea lice and infectious diseases in the conference hall.
Cermaq's PR flak in Canada, Laurie Jensen, was another no-show to collect her "PR Clusterfuck" award in recognition of her tireless work blundering from one PR disaster to another.
Over at the 'Excellence in Aquaculture Awards' there were simply not enough excellent salmon farmers to fill the room (either that or they'd come down with a nasty bug picked up from working on a fish farm).
It was perversely ironic that the guest speaker (speaking in the photo above) was Professor Are Nylund from the University of Bergen - an expert on salmon farming diseases!
The subject of infectious diseases was obviously too hot for the award organizers to handle. "Speak to the hand"!
Intrafish, who sponsored the awards, reported yesterday (8 March):
The organizers of the 'Excellence in Aquaculture Awards' refused entry even though tickets had been registered for!
Welcome to the 'Excellence in Aquaculture Awards' where the public is not welcome!
Meanwhile, all the "Excrement in Aquaculture Award" winners lingered outside on the red carpet like sea lice sucking on farmed salmon!
Over and out from 'Salmon Farming in Norway' - a gift which just keeps on giving infectious diseases, sea lice infestations and hazardous farmed salmon to the rest of the world!
